The problematic under MacOS are double :
1/ the rights to give to the application to open the device (easy to change in
the macOS control panel).
2/ the rights to give to the libgphoto2 library to open the device (not easy:
need admin rights to play with the Terminal).

About the 2/ it's difficult to solve easily. A better way is to use the macOS
API to deal directly with the device as an USB mass storage.

Note: we have a a similar wish under Windows (libgphoto2 do not work at all,
even if it can be compiled with digiKam).
