Bug ID: 520799
Summary: Feature Request: Option to sync Keyboard Backlight
with Night Color (Sunset/Sunrise)
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First master
Reported In:
Platform: EndeavourOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: Power management & brightness
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
DESCRIPTION
Currently, KDE Plasma features "Night Color" which automatically adjusts
screen color temperature based on sunset/sunrise times or a custom schedule.
However, there is no built-in way to schedule the hardware keyboard backlight
in a similar manner.
It would be a fantastic quality-of-life feature if the keyboard backlight
could be optionally tied to the Night Color schedule (or have its own
sunset/sunrise schedule). During the day in well-lit environments, keyboard
backlights are unnecessary and drain battery. At night, they are highly
useful. Having the system automatically turn the keyboard backlight on after
sunset (and off after sunrise) would eliminate the need to manually toggle
the brightness every evening and morning.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open System Settings.
2. Navigate to Power Management or Night Color settings.
3. Look for an option to automate the keyboard backlight based on time of day
or sunset/sunrise.
OBSERVED RESULT
There is no option to schedule the keyboard backlight to turn on
automatically at sunset and turn off at sunrise. The user must manually toggle
the
backlight every day.
EXPECTED RESULT
A setting should exist (e.g., a checkbox under Power Management or Night
Color) to "Sync keyboard backlight with Night Color" or "Turn on keyboard
backlight after sunset". Since Plasma already calculates geolocation and
timing for Night Color, ideally this new feature could hook into those
existing calculations.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: EndeavourOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.26.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Component could also potentially fall under Powerdevil, but as it relates to
UI toggles and tying into Night Color calculations, I am filing it here.
This feature would be highly appreciated for laptop users to optimize battery
life during the day while maintaining usability at night.
