A Screencast, Which Depicts The Current Inconsistence

# DESCRIPTION

The new (presumably, portal-based) application chooser is a significant
downgrade from its previous interation, due to its large-icon, grid design.

The previous QTreeView did not cause any of these disadvantages. In case the
intent might have been to improve touch targets, note that it is now difficult
to utilise with a mouse. That is not how KDE tends to approach this.

# STEPS TO REPRODUCE

- To invoke the inferior version, select “Open” on a file without an
association.

- To invoke the superior version, select its “Properties” context menu entrant,
then “Create” (beside “Open With”). The process is similar when a file
association exists. I believe that it is also accessible from a KCM.

# OBSERVED RESULT

- It lacks categories, so it ignores the user's KMenuEdit preferences;

- It reserves significant space for icons when no icon is provided for an
application, which wastes space, and renders it difficult to read;

- It requires ⪆ 2 × the space of the previous version to display the same
amount of applications; and:

- Long labels cause significant scrolling, else must be truncated.

# EXPECTED RESULT

Utilise the previous version, which remains accessible elsewhere (which is
inconsistent), albeit with an “Add to discover” button added.

# ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

https://discuss.kde.org/t/how-to-return-the-old-version-of-application-picker-in-dolphin/23664/3?u=rokejulianlockhart,
which corroborates my request, explains that “Not being able to just run
anything in the PATH like before with optional parameters is a real downgrade.”
I have not confirmed this.
