I initially thought it might be a bug in some packages in the 'Testing' repository or in Debian's installer from the weekly builds that I installed a few weeks ago. Never had suspend problems before on the same laptop, with the same distro. I had to disable the automatic suspend completely as I was getting tired of not being able to wake it up and to force shutdown to restart it.
