I was able to start a regular Wayland session by logging into the console and entering: XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland dbus-run-session startplasma-wayland I thought about trying to install X11 (as you mentioned) but tried the Wayland approach first and it seems to work OK. Have not rebooted recently to know if the behavior persists.
