So either it fails because of non-drm reasons, or what you recorded simply happened not to include it. Could you simply enable the debug logging, run > sudo dmesg -w > file.log in a terminal, suspend, wake up, and press some buttons on the keyboard to definitely make KWin attempt to turn on the screens?
