Bug ID: 522234
Summary: Importing a variable frame rate portrait format mp4
file results in incorrect frame format
Classification: Applications
Product: kdenlive
Version First 26.04.2
Reported In:
Platform: EndeavourOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Project Bin & Import
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Importing + transcoding a portrait format mp4 clip with variable frame rate can
cause both the clip and the project orientation to be incorrectly interpreted
as landscape.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. The source clip was recorded in portrait format on a Motorola Edge 50 Neo
running Android 16 with all the other video settings default
2. Run Kdenlive and begin a new project set to "Vertical HD 30 fps"
3. Import the clip. You are warned "the clips are not usable for editing" (due
to variable frame rate I believe) and a transcode is suggested to "Lossy x264 I
frame only (VAAPI GPU)"
OBSERVED RESULT
Instead of a "like for like" result from the transcode, the input clip is
rendered as a rotated letterboxed landscape image within a portrait frame.
I have not found a simple way to correct the orientation. I ended up bringing
the clip onto the timeline then manually entering the rotation and scaling
parameters to reconstruct a portrait format. I suspect this involves a loss of
quality in scaling a 1080 pixel image back to 1920 pixels high.
On occasion I have seen the project's format being flipped to landscape, but
this might have been caused by user error as i grappled with the incorrect clip
format.
EXPECTED RESULT
Transcoding a variable frame rate clip should retain the original frame size
and orientation.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: EndeavourOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.26.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.0.11-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (30.4 GiB usable)
Kdenlive: 26.04.2
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The source clip belongs to me and i can provide it for testing, but it's large
(678MB) so a suitable upload site would be needed.
