I just want to add that the laptop brightness keys are also causing a washed-out, greyish image on the external monitor, when laptop brightness keys are turned down. This makes it very unuseable to work with the DE in a laptop multi monitor setup, as a laptop monitor's brightness will need to be changed throughout the day, due to different lighting of a person's room throughout the day.
