Bug ID: 522530
Summary: Feature Request: Add a configurable minimum display
timeout for the System Splash Screen (KSplash)
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First master
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: Splash Screens
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
**Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.**
Yes. On modern, high-performance hardware (e.g., fast NVMe SSDs paired with
modern multi-core CPUs), the Plasma desktop environment loads almost instantly.
As a result, the post-login splash screen (plasma-ksplash) only stays on screen
for a second or sometimes even less before disappearing.
Instead of a smooth, elegant entrance animation, it feels like a rapid visual
glitch or a stutter during boot. This is especially frustrating for users who
spend time customizing their desktop themes and artwork; they want to actually
be able to admire the customization they've done or show it off to others when
booting their system.
**Describe the solution you'd like:**
I would like to see a user-configurable option introduced directly into the
System Settings -> Colors & Themes -> Splash Screen panel.
This feature could be a simple slider or spin-box allowing users to define a
"Minimum Display Duration" (e.g., 0 to 5 seconds).
* If set to 0 (default), the splash screen dismisses the moment the desktop
environment reports it is ready.
* If set to a user value (e.g., 3 or 5 seconds), the engine holds the splash
screen visible for at least that duration, allowing the entrance animations to
play out smoothly before seamlessly fading into the active desktop session.
**Describe alternatives you've considered:**
Currently, users have to manually hack configuration files by adding an
unexposed `Timeout=X` variable under an `[Engine]` block inside
`~/.config/ksplashrc`, which is prone to breaking across major framework
updates and is completely inaccessible to standard users.
**Additional context:**
Providing a native toggle would allow theme designers to create elaborate,
satisfying boot animations without worrying that fast hardware will rob users
of the aesthetic experience.
