Bug ID: 522834
Summary: Kickoff should focus the search field automatically
when opened
Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
Product: kded-appmenu
Version First 6.7.80
Reported In:
Platform: KDE Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: menu exporter
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
Description
When opening the Kickoff Application Launcher apps (apps Menu from top lift
corner), either by pressing the Meta (Windows) key or by clicking the launcher
icon with the mouse, the search field is not focused automatically.
Currently, after opening the launcher, typing a key such as S may trigger
keyboard shortcuts or other actions instead of immediately searching for
applications. Even when global shortcuts have been disabled, the launcher still
does not behave like the Windows Start menu.
Steps to Reproduce
1. Open the Kickoff Application Launcher using the Meta key or by clicking the
launcher icon.
2. Press a letter key (for example, S).
Expected Result
The search field should automatically receive keyboard focus as soon as the
launcher opens. Typing should immediately start searching for applications
without requiring any extra click or focus change, similar to the Windows Start
menu.
Actual Result
The launcher opens, but the search field is not focused. Typing may trigger
other actions instead of starting a search immediately.
Additional Information
This is a usability request rather than a functional bug. Automatically
focusing the search field would make launching applications faster and provide
a more intuitive user experience, especially for users coming from Windows.
