Bug ID: 522849
Summary: Keyboard usability completely missing
Classification: Applications
Product: systemsettings
Version First 6.7.2
Reported In:
Platform: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: grave
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
I was very surprised, to find that systemsettings is *completely unusable* with
the keyboard.
I saw no way to do so. Not even the last resort (tabbing) actually works. The
only thing that works is Ctrl-F. But it’s useless because you can’t tab
anywhere but the button right of it from that. You literally cannot reach the
categories sidebar, e.g. to select one.
So the application seems completely broken, with probably the most fundamental
functionality of all to be missing, even if there may be a well-hidden keyboard
interface in there. (Maybe not let kids who vibe „code“ because everything
takes forever to do on their iPads make the decisions here? XD)
This becomes especially critical, if the setting one tries to reach, has to do
with having problems with the mouse not working (properly).
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run systemsettings.
2. Only use the keyboard.
3. Try TAB. (It only moves between the three quick settings design buttons and
something invisible.)
3. Take a wild guess (because it says it literally nowhere), and press Ctrl-F
to get to the search field.
4. Enter “menu”. (Since you wanted to find where to re-enable the shortcut
underlines for menus that are insanely missing “because” in true Apple spirit,
function follows form apparently.)
5. Try pressing TAB to get to anything. (Since zero other ways to navigate the
UI are suggested anywhere.)
OBSERVED RESULT
• The first TAB gets to the button right of the search field. But doesn’t show
focus, so you will only find out by accident. (Exactly like finding Umlauts on
an Apple screen keyboardoid on their religious jewelry [iPhones & co].)
• The second TAB moves it to … no idea. No focus is shown. Space and Enter do
nothing.
• Further TABs also seem to do nothing.
• I tried a lot of TABs, and never ended up in the category sidebar.
EXPECTED RESULT
Normal keyboard navigatability. As in:
• Move from widget to widget with normal cursor keys. (↑, ↓, ←, →, PgUp, PgDn,
Home, End)
• Visible (and sensible) shortcuts to jump to the various container areas
(sidebar, main view, icon bar with the search field), to be able to navigate
inside them with the keyboard.
• Last-resort TAB / shift-TAB interface, offering linear motion through widgets
in the most sensible way for “going through all the options”.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Gentoo Linux 2.18
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is not even the fault of systemsettings.
This should be a core element of KDE “Frameworks” or even Qt. It should not
even be possible to compile/build an application where this is not guaranteed.
(For the key user interfaces: Visual output, (ideally acoustic output,)
keyboard input, mouse input, and of course the scripting interface (getting the
UI structure or equivalent API programmatically, and calling the
events/functions attached to the UI elements))
