Bug ID: 523435
Summary: Performance regression with VSync on 240Hz+ displays
when using native Wayland in Proton on KDE Plasma
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.3
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Enabling VSync in games running in the Wayland compositor, with Adaptive Sync
disabled in KDE settings at 240 Hz or higher, breaks performance.
Whenever I force Wayland via the launch argument in Steam (using either
Proton-GE or Cachy-Proton), the games start dropping frames. Frametimes are
reported as consistent, but the gameplay feels choppy. However, when I enable
Adaptive Sync → Always in the display settings, the problem goes away.
Interestingly, when I overclock my display to 260 Hz, the frames only drop down
to 173 fps.
(It's always exactly 240fps -> 160fps or 260fps -> 173fps)
Framerate will recover when not doing anything after about 5-10 seconds.
The problem does not exist when setting the refresh rate to 144hz or lower.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run either Warframe or Dead Island 2 with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 in a
Wayland-enabled Proton version on a 240 Hz (or higher) screen.
2. Interact with in-game objects (Foundry, Arsenal, Navigation, Lockers...) or
run a mission.
3. Framerate will recover when not doing anything after about 5-10 seconds.
OBSERVED RESULT
Frames drop and the game feels choppy.
EXPECTED RESULT
The game maintains a consistent and high framerate, similar to running under
XWayland or Wayland with a refresh rate set below 240 Hz.
