Gamescope can already expose a higher virtual resolution and downsample it, but when used nested under a Plasma Wayland session it introduces an additional compositor stage. Would it be possible for KWin to use DRM/KMS plane scaling or the GPU display engine for the final higher-resolution-to-native-resolution downscale when supported by the driver?
