Bug ID: 524707
Summary: Wayland: Allow trusted screen recording tools to
access global cursor position via portal/protocol
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.4
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
I am a screen recording/tutorial creator using OBS Studio on KDE Plasma
Wayland.
I need zoom-to-mouse functionality (e.g., Zoominator plugin, obs-zoom-to-mouse
script)
to track the cursor position across the entire desktop for tutorial recordings
and
live streaming.
Current Problem:
Wayland's security model blocks applications from querying the global cursor
position
outside their own window. This breaks:
OBS zoom-to-mouse plugins
Screen magnifiers for accessibility
Tutorial recording workflows
Request:
Please provide a KWin/Wayland-specific protocol, D-Bus API, or XDG Desktop
Portal
extension that allows trusted/whitelisted applications (like OBS Studio) to
query
global cursor position for legitimate screen recording and accessibility
purposes.
Suggested Implementation:
A new portal: org.freedesktop.portal.ScreenRecording or extend existing
org.freedesktop.portal.RemoteDesktop to include cursor position
Or a KWin-specific protocol that apps can request permission for
Permission granted via system settings (like camera/mic permissions)
Why This Matters:
Plasma 6.8 is dropping native X11 session
Content creators are forced to use XWayland or lose zoom functionality
This affects accessibility tools too
System: CachyOS Linux, KDE Plasma 6.7.4, Wayland
