I can confirm both of your scenarios: Pressing Home in a blank project crashes the program immediately. Creating a new project, adding a video clip to the timeline so it's not highlighted/active, and pressing Home also results in a crash. However, when I dropped the same clip onto the timeline a second time, I was no longer able to crash it—regardless of whether the clip/track was selected/highlighted or not. One additional observation: file size seems to play a role. When testing with smaller video files (under 1 GB), I couldn't get it to crash.
