In my case trying to re-enable HDR immediately black screens again until the timeout ticks over and the change is reverted automatically. I hadn't tried playing with TTY switching properly before now, but for what it's worth merely switching to a TTY and switching straight back seems to bring the display back up without even needing to override the configuration.
