Bug ID: 526192
Summary: Add a setting to control icon spacing / item width in
the Icons view
Classification: Applications
Product: dolphin
Version First 26.08.1
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR

Target Milestone: ---
## Context
Following a change introduced in Dolphin 26.08.0 (and reverted in 26.08.1), the
Icons view briefly used a denser layout with narrower icon items. This denser
layout was appreciated for information density, especially on smaller laptop
screens (15"), and allowed more items per row (e.g. one line instead of two
with the same view settings).
Dolphin 26.08.1 reverted to the previous, wider spacing. There is currently no
way to adjust this spacing.
The Dolphin maintainer (meven) confirmed on discuss.kde.org that this could
become a setting for the Icons view, and explicitly asked for a feature request
to be filed:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/dolphin-26-08-and-kio-perf-improvements/49711/18
## Requested feature
Add an option (in Dolphin Settings → View Modes → Icons, or equivalent) to
control the icon item spacing / width in the Icons view. This would allow users
to choose between:
- the current default spacing
- a denser spacing, similar to what was briefly used in 26.08.0
## Use case
On a laptop/tablette screen, the current wide spacing significantly reduces the
number of visible items and forces additional scrolling. A denser layout
improves information density without requiring a smaller icon size.
## Workaround currently used
Setting the label width to its minimum value reduces the visual impact, but
does not restore the previous density and is not equivalent to the 26.08.0
behavior.
