DESCRIPTION
My desktop broke on boot today after hitting a broken lockscreen error. After
rebooting, plasmashell won't start up at all. The desktop wallpaper or taskbar
just don't load. KeepassXC and Stretchbreak both launch, accompanied by the
wallpaper, the wallpaper showing up for a brief second, before disappearing, 2
or 3 times, then no longer appearing.
I tried resetting all my local KDE configs (~/.config/plasma*, kwin*, kde*, and
clearing ~/.cache), but it still crashes immediately when plasmashell tries to
run.
I created a fresh test user to see if it was system-wide. The test user loaded
fine at first, but clicking around on the panel (specifically network/applets)
crashed it there too.
Running plasmashell in gdb shows it segfaulting inside Fontconfig
(FcCharSetHasChar) while Qt is trying to set up a QQuickLabel.
Notably, I'm able to launch Konsole, and apps, but the desktop environment is
completely missing.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. System booted into a lockscreen/launcher breakdown error ("The screen locker
is broken and unlocking is not possible anymore...").
2. Upon reboot and login, plasmashell fails to load the desktop shell/wallpaper
and panel state. (`plasmashell`)
3. Attempted a full local configuration reset by purging/moving user config
directories (~/.config/plasma*, ~/.config/kwin*, ~/.config/kde*,
~/.local/share/plasma*) and clearing QML/KScreen caches (~/.cache/plasma*,
~/.cache/qmlcache).
Despite resetting configs, plasmashell continues to crash upon startup or when
interacting with panel widgets/network indicators.
4. In a secondary fresh user account, Plasma loads, but specific panel
interactions (e.g., clicking network/applet entries) re-trigger the crash.
OBSERVED RESULT
plasmashell crashes on startup (or when interacting with panel applets),
leaving a blank screen with no desktop panels, widgets, or wallpaper. KeepassXC
and Stretchbreak both launch, accompanied by the wallpaper, the wallpaper
showing up for a brief second, before disappearing, 2 or 3 times, then no
longer appearing.
EXPECTED RESULT
plasmashell should launch and render UI elements.
