Title: Regression in Plasma 6.8.0: Desktop icons disappear on primary monitor
in multi-monitor setup

Product: plasmashell
Component: Folder View widget
Affected version: 6.8.0
Last working version: 6.7.5
Operating system: CachyOS Linux

DESCRIPTION

After upgrading KDE Plasma from version 6.7.5 to 6.8.0 on CachyOS Linux, all
existing desktop icons disappeared from my primary monitor.

The icons on my secondary monitor remained visible and functional.

All desktop files and Steam shortcuts were still present in my desktop
directory. However, Plasma no longer displayed them on the primary monitor.

Interestingly, dragging an icon from the secondary monitor to the primary
monitor made that particular icon appear on both monitors. All other previously
existing icons remained invisible.

After restoring a Btrfs snapshot containing Plasma 6.7.5, all desktop icons
immediately reappeared.

This strongly suggests a regression introduced in Plasma 6.8.0, possibly
related to multi-monitor handling, Folder View, or screen assignments.

SYSTEM INFORMATION

Operating system: CachyOS Linux (Arch-based)
Affected KDE Plasma version: 6.8.0
Last known working version: 6.7.5
Desktop layout: Folder View
Desktop directory: /home/xanar/Schreibtisch
Monitor configuration: Three connected and enabled displays
Display protocol: Not yet confirmed (Wayland or X11)

MONITOR CONFIGURATION

The following configuration was obtained using kscreen-doctor -o:

HDMI-A-1:
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 200 Hz
Priority: 1 (Primary)
Position: 0,0

DP-2:
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 100 Hz
Priority: 2
Position: 1920,0

DP-1:
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 60 Hz
Priority: 3
Position: 0,0

HDMI-A-1 and DP-1 share the same logical screen coordinates. No replication
source was reported.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Start with a working KDE Plasma 6.7.5 installation using multiple monitors.

2. Ensure that desktop icons are visible on the primary and secondary monitors.

3. Perform a full system upgrade to KDE Plasma 6.8.0 using the CachyOS package
manager.

4. Reboot and log in to Plasma.

5. Observe that existing desktop icons are no longer visible on the primary
monitor.

ACTUAL RESULT

All existing desktop icons disappeared from the primary monitor.

Desktop icons on the secondary monitor remained visible.

The primary desktop continued displaying its wallpaper and allowed access to
desktop settings.

The underlying files and .desktop launchers were still present in the desktop
directory.

Dragging an icon from the secondary monitor to the primary monitor made the
icon appear on both monitors.

Previously existing icons remained invisible on the primary monitor.

Steam could not simply recreate the missing shortcuts because the corresponding
files already existed.

EXPECTED RESULT

All existing desktop icons should remain visible on their respective monitors
after upgrading KDE Plasma.

Users should not need to recreate shortcuts, reset desktop configurations, or
downgrade Plasma to restore their desktop icons.

TROUBLESHOOTING PERFORMED

The following troubleshooting steps were attempted without success:

1. Restarted plasma-plasmashell.service.

2. Verified that Folder View was enabled.

3. Verified that Folder View pointed to the correct desktop directory.

4. Manually configured /home/xanar/Schreibtisch as a custom Folder View
location.

5. Verified that desktop filtering was configured to show all files.

6. Changed the desktop icon sorting order.

7. Cleared the saved ScreenMapping configuration.

8. Reset the saved icon positions for the affected desktop containment.

9. Verified that the desktop files still existed and had appropriate
permissions.

None of these attempts restored the missing desktop icons.

PLASMA CONFIGURATION DETAILS

The configuration file plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc contained three
Folder View containments:

Containment 790:
Plugin: org.kde.plasma.folder
lastScreen=0

Containment 877:
Plugin: org.kde.plasma.folder
lastScreen=1

Containment 879:
Plugin: org.kde.plasma.folder
lastScreen=2

The saved icon positions contained references to some desktop files that no
longer existed.

However, resetting the saved positions for the affected containment did not
resolve the issue.

RELEVANT LOG MESSAGES

The Plasma journal repeatedly reported:

requesting unexisting screen geometry 4294967295
requesting unexisting screen available rect 4294967295

These messages may indicate an invalid screen reference, although I cannot
confirm whether they are directly related to the missing desktop icons.

Additional messages appeared while opening Folder View settings:

QML ConfigIcons: Created graphical object was not placed in the graphics scene.

QML ConfigLocation: Created graphical object was not placed in the graphics
scene.

No direct causal connection has been established for these messages.

CONFIRMED WORKAROUND: RETURNING TO PLASMA 6.7
