            Bug ID: 527668
Summary: Regression in 6.8.1: on Wayland with mixed refresh
rates (240 Hz + 60 Hz), window and Plasma popup
animations stutter once any window is open; disabling
the 60 Hz screen fixes it
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First 6.8.1
       Reported In:
          Platform: Other
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: multi-screen
          Assignee: [email protected]

  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION
Since upgrading Plasma 6.8.0 -> 6.8.1, window and popup animations on my 240 Hz
primary screen stutter whenever a second 60 Hz screen is enabled and any window
is open.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Two monitors on a Wayland session: primary at 240 Hz, secondary at 60 Hz.
2. On an empty desktop (no windows open), open the Kickoff menu, the audio
volume applet popup, or the Bluetooth applet popup. Animations are smooth.
3. Open any application window (e.g. Konsole, or an Electron app).
4. Open, minimize, and restore that window. Open Kickoff, the audio applet, or
the Bluetooth applet again.

OBSERVED RESULT
After step 3, every animation on the 240 Hz primary screen stutters: window
open, minimize and restore (Scale/Squash), Kickoff, and the audio and Bluetooth
applet popups. It does not look like a clean 60 Hz cap. It looks irregular and
laggy, as if frames are being dropped or paced wrongly.

Observations:
- Disabling the 60 Hz secondary screen makes all animations smooth again right
away.
- With only the desktop shown (no client windows), animations are smooth even
with both screens enabled.
- Plasma 6.8.0 works fine; Plasma 6.8.1 is broken. I bisected within a single
system upgrade:
  - Plasma 6.8.1 + qt6-declarative 6.12.0-2: BROKEN
  - Plasma 6.8.0 + qt6-declarative 6.12.0-1: works
  - Plasma 6.8.0 + qt6-declarative 6.12.0-2: works, so Qt is ruled out
  - Kernel 7.3.0 and Mesa 26.2.5 stayed at the new versions in every test, so
they are ruled out too.

EXPECTED RESULT
Animations on the 240 Hz screen run at 240 Hz regardless of the second screen's
refresh rate and of whether windows are open, as they do on Plasma 6.8.0.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
- Operating System: CachyOS (Arch-based), x86_64_v4 / znver4 repos
- KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.1 (broken), 6.8.0 (works)
- KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
- Qt Version: 6.12.0 (qt6-base 6.12.0-3, qt6-declarative 6.12.0-2)
- Kernel Version: 7.3.0-cachyos
- Graphics Platform: Wayland, compositing via OpenGL ES (EGL), atomic
modesetting
- Mesa: 26.2.5

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hardware:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D (has Radeon 610M iGPU: card0, no monitors connected
to it)
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (radeonsi, navi31): card1, both monitors are
connected here
- DP-1, primary: ASUS PG32UCDM, 3840x2160 @ 240.016 Hz, scale 1.45, VRR off,
HDR off
- DP-2: HP Z24n G2, 1920x1200 @ 59.95 Hz, scale 1, rotated (portrait)

Config:
- allowTearing: true, Xwayland scale 1.45, Night Color active.
- wl_output advertises the correct refresh rates to clients (240.016 Hz and
59.950 Hz).
- No KWIN_* or QT_* environment overrides.
