In my case the image *is* copied to /var/lib/plasmalogin/wallpapers/ correctly, with the right owner and mode (plasmalogin:plasmalogin, 0644), and Image= is written to /etc/plasmalogin.conf. So the file is not the problem. Two other things are: 1. The Image= that ends up in the file is the *previously* configured wallpaper, not the one selected in the KCM. Reproduced twice in a row: I selected image A, the file kept image B (the previous value). The wallpaper page logs the two errors below when this happens. 2. The KCM removes WallpaperPluginId=org.kde.image from the [Greeter] group on save. Without that key the greeter cannot resolve a wallpaper plugin at all and falls back to the default background, even when Image= points to a perfectly readable file. Logs from systemsettings when opening/applying the wallpaper page: qrc:/kcm/kcm_plasmalogin/WallpaperConfig.qml:35: Error: Cannot assign to non-existent property "cfg_PreviewImageDefault" qrc:/kcm/kcm_plasmalogin/WallpaperConfig.qml:35: Error: Cannot assign to non-existent property "cfg_PreviewImage" qrc:/kcm/kcm_plasmalogin/WallpaperConfig.qml:35: Error: Cannot assign to non-existent property "cfg_DarkLightScheduleStateDefault" qrc:/kcm/kcm_plasmalogin/WallpaperConfig.qml:35: Error: Cannot assign to non-existent property "cfg_DarkLightScheduleState" file:///usr/share/plasma/wallpapers/org.kde.image/contents/ui/config.qml:138: TypeError: Value is null and could not be converted to an object Two guesses for whoever looks at this: - WallpaperConfig.qml:30-35 copies every key of configDialog.wallpaperConfiguration into the wallpaper plugin's config item. org.kde.image's config/main.xml declares PreviewImage and DarkLightScheduleState, but its config/ui/config.qml declares no matching cfg_* properties (they are internal there, handled as wallpaperConfiguration.PreviewImage), so those four assignments throw. - config/ui/config.qml:138 (when: root.configDialog.currentWallpaper === "org.kde.slideshow") throws only in the KCM; the same page works fine in System Settings -> Wallpaper. The configDialog object the KCM hands over (Appearance.qml:23) is not equivalent to the one the desktop dialog provides, and the TypeError aborts the wiring of the selected image.
