In the usage log that you attached, it looks like
E:\AircraftPix\001_OPENER_Air_Force_Fleet_Size.jpg and
C:\Users\pradi\Pictures\V-22R.jpg may not have been opening for you even if
they were the only file you opened in 5.3.3.
Could you double check that these files will open in 5.3.4.1 if you open them
as the first (and only) file you open?

(Note for dra.w.p.il.e+bugskde: The log is missing any "KRITA DID NOT CLOSE
CORRECTLY" lines, but the line that refers to "Importing" 001_NEW_NGAD.jpg is
always followed by a "Loaded image from image/jpeg" line. The "Importing" line
for these other two images seems to always be the last line in a session, even
if no other files have been opened, suggesting that it crashed.)

There is a brief period after you click on a recent image where the other
images in the list get greyed out, and I'm not sure if that could be what you
are noticing as a "selection." It will probably look different on Windows or
with other themes, but if you are seeing something like what happens in this
video, that is normal:

(Note for dra.w.p.il.e+bugskde: I manually added the tortoise to the recent
files list to see if just having it present causes any trouble with 5.3.4.1,
but it didn't seem to.)
