For some reason an old version I wrote up got posted here, before I did an additional test and modified it. Updated statement: First of all, I attempted to log in with the following environment variables exported at system level, which I did by adding them to my ~/.profile: export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose This has indeed fixed the issue, and caused KWin to render window decorations again!
