I just navigate with JKL and set new points using the I and O shortcuts, with no need to ever clear them - they just update with new points. But then, as you say, some people prefer to use the mouse... I had no idea that there were 'handles' until you mentioned it - I just tried it out, but I still don't really understand the workflow for using the mouse for this, so I think I will just butt out.
