A solution to this issue may be found at
https://sourceforge.net/p/kmymoney2/mailman/message/21491191/.
Although it refers to KMM version 2, the provided resolution worked for version
4.8.0. Following is the resolution from that post;

"DOpen the investment account in the investment view. Right click and add
create a 'New investment'. Use the same symbol as for the security you
created. Otherwise, KMyMoney will create another one.

Once you have gone through the above mentioned procedure, the stock account
shows up in your list."

The key to this solution is utilize the existing stock symbol when creating the
new stock. Once you do, the stock will show up in the drop list.
