In my test cases where I just opened Kate (just a new file, I didn't even have to insert or modify some text) and then I tried to logout I've always got the black screen. My assumption is this is depending from some applications not closing as they should and/or it is depending from the KDE feature to save the state of the open applications and to restore them at the next login (a feature that I have turned off on my desktops).
