Resources are *vastly* more scarce than they are in a multi-billion-dollar commercial company like Microsoft. Maintaining compatibility layers has a cost measured in less development of new features and fewer other bugs getting fixed. If you want greater effort put into this legacy system, you are welcome to jump on board and submit patches! :) That's basically how things get done around here: people working on things that they feel are important. StatusNotifierItem is a FreeDesktop spec that Linux application developers *should* be using. It's 13 years old.
