Something that happens whenever I first run an unconfigured video game, which for some reason chooses to both default to fullscreen as well as 640 x 480 resolution. The only easy workaround is to keep a backup of ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc which contains your desktop settings; Whenever the resolution breaks the widgets, just kill plasmashell overwrite that file with your backup and start Plasma back up again.
