--- Comment #58 from boonhead.nl <bugs.kde....@boonhead.nl> ---
Holy cow that worked! (pkill plasmashell; QSG_RENDER_LOOP=threaded kstart
plasmashell)
Now my system is running smooth as f*! :D
Even closing opened applications returns my total system memory usage back to a
mere 678 KB!

I've been experiencing this problem since the upgrade from KDE Neon 5.8 LTS to
5.12 LTS. It might not be relevant, but my theme has lots of semi-transparent
elements and my background changes every 30 seconds.
I could not survive an hour before even my swap ran out. A movie would hang 30
minutes in.

For the time being, I have modified file
/etc/xdg/autostart/org.kde.plasmashell.desktop to contain:
Exec=QSG_RENDER_LOOP=threaded plasmashell --shut-up

And deleted file /etc/xdg/autostart/plasmashell.desktop since it was an almost
exact duplicate, the only difference being that it included the "--shut-up"
parameter of which I can't find any documentation but is mentioned a lot with
"100% CPU usaged".
