There are other external solutions for getting a URL bar when Gwenview opens:

  1. Use a shell alias, e.g. alias gwen="gwenview ~"
  2. Similar to 1), create a custom Desktop file that opens Gwenview in a
specified folder (e.g. ~)

I personally think an empty URL bar on the Start page is a bit weird and
unconventional. It might be confusing - if it's empty, it's probably not
obvious what it actually is if you don't already know.

Even if we must change Gwenview to accommodate this use case, I think a better
solution would be to allow the user to specify a starting folder, similar to
Dolphin.
