I've actually just noticed it again today, Dolphin 18.04.1. You may only see it
with a large number of subdirectories in one directory... in my case I have
3870 subdirectories in the folder with this issue (each one contains images).
Note that the issue only happens a few times after booting up the system then
stops.

I'm not sure how I can further simplify the steps; Let's say you have the
directory /foo/bar which contains 4000 subdirectories... to be sure this isn't
a factor, make sure each one has several jpg or png files. Open Dolphin in the
root directory, make the address bar editable, then type in "/foo/bar/" and
wait: Some sub-directories will not be listed at first, even if you type in
their names (eg: "/foo/bar/1234")... you'll have to delete the "bar/" part and
type it back in a few times to make them show up, and once they do it will work
for the rest of the session.
