This is actually by design. We are not aware of a use case for sending e-mails with an empty subject. Technical reason: It breaks some e-mail threading algorithms. Opinion: There are certain patterns in e-mail usage which we like and "encourage" Trojita's users to follow. Writing e-mails with a subject is one of them. In my opinion, it's a good "etiquette" to provide a very short summary on what that e-mail is all about. Having usable subjects is something which makes navigation through thousands of e-mails more doable.
