It would be very useful to have the option to put the original pictures and
previous versions of an image in a (maybe hidden) sub-directory.
Picasa used to proceed like this. When you modify an image and save the
changes, the original is moved into a sub-directory and only the last version
of the pictures remain in the directory.
The main advantage is to maintain a clean view of the picture folders. You'll
end up with the same view whether you look at a folder with digikam or a file
explorer.
Parts of my photo collection is stored on a network storage. If I want to show
some pictures from any device browsing through the directories, I currently
have all the versions of the pictures.
