sorry to resurrect this old thread. I think I still have the same problem.
Some files were modified by an external software (tags or face rectangles were
added), so for some reason, the Exif "Creation date and time" was updated to
that moment.
However, these pictures already had an "Original date and time", which is left
untouched. When digikam sorts files by date, it uses the "Creation date and
time" instead of the "Original date and time" (the creation date, as I
understand it).
So basically my photos are sorted in the order that they have been last
modified.
I can provide some samples if you wish.
