Some newer screens do that. I think it's part of a newer specification.
It's very annoying, especially since one of my screens even cuts the connection
if you switch to a different input, which is very very annoying if you use a
monitor for two computers (e.g. desktop and laptop).

Sometimes there are configuration options. My Dell has a setting "Displayport
1.2" that (among other things?) controls this behavior.
My Eizo has a hidden control menu where you can adjust settings that change it
for both Displayport and HDMI.

Either way, the desktop has to be able to cope with that, since screen layouts
do change in reality, especially for mobile computers.
But I guess everybody here knows that. ;)
