We made this change because people complained (rightly) that with tiny icons,
the labels were illegible. See

for an example of how long labels looked before this change.

It seems that no matter what we do here, someone is unhappy, so I strongly
support the introduction of a slider to determine the grid spacing. I think
it's the only way we can end the cycle of "it's too big!" "Now I can't read the
labels!" "Now it's too big again!" "Now I can't read the labels again!"
