            Bug ID: 403390
Summary: Activation of compositor causes endless resetting
[drm] GPU on Raspberry Pi 2B
           Product: kwin
           Version: 5.8.9
          Platform: Debian stable
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: NOR
         Component: compositing
          Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
          Reporter: mikegrossk...@compuserve.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

operation of the machine is not possible with activated Compositor

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. tick the box 'enable Compositor at startup' in System Settings
2. execute any mouseclick or menu operation
3. sometimes I get back to 'normality' after a while or hitting ESC or CTRl+c
in bad cases Ctrl+Alt+Del to log out, in worse case a reboot after
Ctrl+Alt+F1 and in worst case a restart after unplugging power.

OBSERVED RESULT
As soon as Compositor is activated the panel reacts with
- changing color, blurring
- display panel text upside down
- colored rectangles on desktop
- clock stops
- no reaction on mouse-operations/keystrokes

EXPECTED RESULT
  none of the above

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux: Raspbian Stretch lite 4.14.79-v7+
KDE Plasma:
kwin version: 8.5.6 **ATTENTION not 8.5.9**
KDE Plasma Version: 5.8.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.28.0
Qt Version: 5.7.1
SAMBA, ssh, chromium-browser, mysql, phpmyadmin, TeamViewer14(host), VNC, VLC

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hardware:

  Raspberry Pi 2B
power supply BBC stabilized 5V 30W for 2 Raspberry Pi
power supply BBC stabilized 12V 30W for USB Hub
  powered usb-hub
USB Wlan Realtek WN725N as AP
USB Wlan Edimax N300 as Internet Interface to a hotspot
  2 USB drives
Raspicomm (IO board with RTC, serial interface, 4 inputs, 2 outputs)
  fan cooled in enhousing

Modifications:
- /etc/X11/Xsession changed to create instead of append

     exec >"$ERRFILE" 2>&1 instead of exec >>"$ERRFILE" 2>&1

this was a must since the original setting "appending" causes a logfile
~/.Xsession-errors like a novel. It is not just invisible for beginners.
It is containing multiple repeated (partially unsolvable) errors, multiple
non-error information lines and its size grows within minutes over the
capacity of this type of machine. On a small mmc this lets the system
hang up after a few minutes.

- using zram.sh creating 4 x 0.34 GiB
- adding the software package 'bc', to make sure that mathematical operations
are feasible in bash (without modifying zram.sh it will not work!)
- modification of zram.sh, so that calculation results are ok and can be used
- disabled /etc/init.d/dphys-swapfile
- all lines of /etc/dphys-swapfile commented
- entries in /boot/config.txt:
    dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
    no overclocking
    no memory split

Remarks:
SAMBA, ssh, chromium-browser, mysql, phpmyadmin, TeamViewerhost, VNC, VLC
system is up 24/7, running smoothly and reliable without problems
It has been quite time-consuming to get this system running stable.
I am not using any desktop-effects. The issue appeared after turning
Compositor on-just to test "transparency" of conky.
I really enjoy having the KDE Desktop on the Raspberry. I had KDE installed
before on 2 laptops with OpenSuse Leap 15. I am happy that also SAMBA
communication works flawlessly with two further Win7/Win10 machines.

I have classified this issue as critical, because it might cause frustration
especially when beginners are trying to set up a system and get a not usable
result, without any indication why this happens.
