One is used "internally" in kdecoration The other is passed to kwin eiser via X property or Wayland SHM (thanks to martin code) In both cases the generation of the shadow is cached, and the rendering of it is left upstream. so I would look there (upstream) to the unbalanced save/restore Not much internet connection on my side atm, but I'll double check whether there could be some QPainter issue on my side as soon as I get some more.
