Problem were security settings from macOS disallowing access to Pictures.
workaround:
- quit digikam
- remove database (rm ~/Pictures/digikam4.db)
- start digikam, this triggers "digikam wants access to your pictures" in macOS
- once access is granted lighttable works again
I only use lighttable as for the rest I use darktable instead of digikam, hence
I did not notice the access rights problem. Access problem shows when trying to
view picture in digikam, no error or feedback in lighttable though. Since
thumbnails are shown application looked to be working...
