At this point I'm pretty stumped, although I think the fact that non-PTP mode (the device digikam autodetects) isn't throwing any errors or warnings related to libgphoto2 suggests that it might not necessarily be libgphoto2-related. I am not sure what other libraries to try and debug to figure out what's going on. I should add that I can mount the storage just fine and also browse the photos with an ifuse mount, so the issue seems to be directly related to the camera roll and not communicating with the phone as a whole.
