I periodically get the "Filter Failed" message with my printer as well (an HP
LaserJet p1606dn, which requires a proprietary driver). Reinstalling the driver
fixes it. I had assumed it was a driver issue. Can you see if reinstalling the
driver for your printer on the Kubuntu machine fixes it for you as well?
