I was able to test and reproduce the issue - I have two very large TIFF scans, one is 1.6G and as soon as DigiKam saw the photo in a photo directory, it crashed. As soon as I moved it out of the photos directory, no more problems. BTW, if put it in an "ignored directory", it looks as if DigiKam scans all directories before it ignores it so it even crashed if it was in an ignored directory.
