Sorry for the delay, but it was harder than I thought to run a test with a
result that seems consistent enough to post it here.

short version: the remote part doe not seem to be the problem

long version:
To reproduce the behaviour with local files I created two folders.

Folder path 1:
/home/myuser/Musik/Amarok_Test/Collection_Negative/Collection_Negative
Folder path 2:
/home/myuser/Musik/Amarok_Test/Collection_Negative/Collection_Earth

- Each folder contains exactly one album by a different artist.
- The files exist “physically” on the same drive as Amarok.
- The mp3 tags of the files are set correctly.
- The folder /home/myuser/Musik/Amarok_Test inlcuding its sub-folders was added
to the local collection.
- Any other folders were deselected.
- Next I created corresponding bookmarks in Amarok, to filter the library by
path name, and to define a different sorting for each bookmark.

Col_Negative:
amarok://navigate/collections?filter=Dateiname:%22Collection_Negative%22&levels=albumartist-album&show_cover=false&show_years=false

Col_Earth:
amarok://navigate/collections?filter=Dateiname:%22Collection_Earth%22&levels=album&show_cover=false&show_years=false

When I restart Amarok and select the bookmarks from the pull-down menu, the
following things can/will happen.

1) Selecting Col_Earth
- both albums are shown
- they are sorted by ‘album’ only
- they cannot be expanded in the left pane tree
- they cannot be added to the playlist

2) Pressing the “clear text” button in the search field
- both albums are shown
- they are sorted by ‘album’
- they can be expanded in the left pane tree
- they can be added to the playlist

3) Selecting Col_Negative
- both albums are shown
- they are sorted by ‘album artist’ and then by ‘album’
- they cannot be expanded in the left pane tree
- they cannot be added to the playlist

4) Pressing the “clear text” button again
Same result as described under 2)

5) Selecting Col_Negative again
- the left pane is completely empty
- the empty list is sorted by ‘album artist’ and then by ‘album’

6) Selecting Col_Negative and Col_Earth alternately
- the left pane remains completely empty
- the sorting seems to change arbitrarily without any noticeable logic

As I had the feeling that the problem might be related to the sorting, I
created two more bookmarks, in which I only made one change, that is to define
the same sorting order for both bookmarks.

And now for the funny part: I am 99% sure, that when I started to write this
posting this morning, these two new bookmarks showed indeed a different
behaviour. Now in the evening, as I continue this post, the result is exactly
the same as described above (steps 1-6).

This matches my impression, that the behaviour on selecting the bookmarks is
not fully reproducible. That (besides a lot of work) is one reason why it took
me so long to reply to your question.

As written in my original post, I've sometimes had the feeling that clearing
the search box improves the chances that the bookmark might work as expected
(by me). Like as if there is a line of code missing, the one that clears the
current view before applying the newly selected bookmark. But nothing was
reproducible enough to see a pattern.

So maybe this is all me. I am a long-time Windows and Win Amp user, and started
with Linux and Amarok only a few months ago. Maybe I do miss something
essential or my understanding/expectation regarding the function of bookmarks
is “wrong”.

As written any help is appreciated, as I do not want to go back to Windows at
all. And Amarok seems to be the best program of many that I checked out during
the last months.
