With my pc (linux openSuse 15.1) when i view video with vlc, vlc do something to avoid lock screen. Perhaps you can emulate some user actions thus android avoids going in sleep mode or something else which stops kdeconnect. Today with MS Windows there is the equivalent of kdeconnect "your phone".
