That's what's being discussed by various developers in the comment thread of this bug report. :) There are a variety of technical challenges to making work on both X11 and Wayland. On X11, the challenges relate to various mismatches between what X11 provides the window manager and what the window manager needs. On Wayland, it're more about needed functionality not having been merged into a protocol yet.
