Hi, so your suggestion is to paste the image in the top-left corner of the
selection *that existed when you copied the layer* or top-left corner of the
canvas?
For the first part - I believe it's already implemented. I checked both on the
same image (copying and pasting) and then on a new image. It pastes in the same
position as it was cut from. The only difference is when the whole image would
end up outside of the canvas (so it will be completely invisible), then the
image is copied in a different way. In such case we might need some discussion
with other artists which behaviour is preferable.
For the second part, it needs discussion with artists since it would be
changing behaviour - it needs a good argument why pasting at top left would be
better than pasting in the center.
