Font size before reboot

Date format of digital clock is set to "Custom" format "MM–dd ddd".
 After setting the format, the date is displayed in normal font (attached
screenshot). But after a reboot or logout-login, the date font size becomes
huge (attached screenshot).
 To fix this, I must first set the date format to "Short Date" and then back to
"User Defined". But after a reboot, the date font size becomes huge again.
