This sounds like a crash.
Can you find the crash log at:
C:\Users\(your-username)\AppData\Local\kritacrash.log and post the content
here?
If it's quite large then a link to a Pastebin store may be more convenient.
I've tested this situation with the 4.4.1 Linux appimage and the 4.4.1 Windows
installed package and I don't get a crash.
With both .png and .jpg files imported as patterns during selection of Pattern
fill of a Fill Layer, the result looks normal but after Saving as .kra and then
opening in a new session of krita, the Fill layer shows no pattern.
The reason for this to do with the reference pointer for the pattern file in
the .filterconfig file of the layer data inside the .kra file.
That may need a separate bug report for the failure of layer content aspect.
