Reported for an old KMix version, but may still be relevant.

Is this using PulseAudio?  If not, then this is expected behaviour - ALSA
volumes are set in hardware and are not per-user.  Some distros save and
restore the ALSA volumes when a user logs out and then in again, but it is
possible that this does not happen when simply switching users.

The same apparently applies to PulseAudio, especially if it is run in system
mode.
