I still have the old laptop for trying out patches, but I can't troubleshoot this problem quite as easily now. This new laptop has 16 (logical) processors while the previous had 4. I'm wondering if this race only happens when all N threads used by KDE startup are forced to use a smaller set of processors (everybody else who has reported this has 8 or 4 processors).
